An untreated cavity will inevitably continue to spread and grow in size. In time it can compromise a significant amount of dental structure and even infect the internal structure of the tooth. As this starts to happen, the tooth will be at increasing risk of suffering a severe dental fracture.

Should this occur, we might be able to treat the tooth by performing a root canal. Once all the decayed material has been removed, we will prepare an abutment capable of anchoring a dental crown.

If a large dental abscess has developed in your periodontal tissues, or the tooth decay is excessive, Dr. Justin Karrel might recommend extracting the root of the tooth. After your gums have been sutured and allowed to heal, he can then start the process of a dental bridge restoration.

This is essentially a solid piece of dental work that mimics the appearance of a natural tooth. It will include open crowns on each end. The dental bridge will eventually be cemented onto abutments formed out of the core of the two neighboring teeth.

Once a dental lab completes the dental bridge you will need to return to Justin Karrel DMD for a brief follow up appointment. Then our team will cement it into place with a very strong dental adhesive.

If you live in the Staunton, Virginia area and you have a severely decayed or fractured tooth you should not delay in calling 540-885-1631 to seek treatment at Justin Karrel DMD.
